Postgraduate Trainees Success Stories - 2016

Dr Eyad Juzoor Postgraduate Trainees Success Stories
My name is Eyad and I trained in the Orthopedic Department of Al-Makassed Hospital and later practiced in Ramallah. I realized that we are deficient in many fields and sometimes find it necessary to transfer even simple cases to either Jordanian or Israeli hospitals. I decided to do my sub-specialty in one of those fields. I applied for a scholarship from the programme run by Juzoor and FQMS. They arranged a fellowship at King’s College Hospital, London where I focused on knee and shoulder surgery between March 2014 and March 2016. I was also involved in complicated trauma cases. During that period I passed part one FRCSOrth. In March, I finished my training and went back home. I started working in Ramallah again, where there have been many shoulder and knee cases for me to treat as we don’t have any shoulder or knee surgeons in the West Bank or Gaza. I have been involved in complicated trauma cases. We have managed to reduce the transfers to hospitals outside of the West Bank and we can now treat most of our cases. I am back in the UK to sit the 2nd part of the FRCSOrth examination and will return home to Ramallah to continue my work.

Dr Eyad Juzoor Postgraduate Trainees Success Stories
My name is Bashar and I am a surgeon from Palestine. Through FQMS and Juzoor, I have had the opportunity to do a 2-year fellowship in laparoscopic general surgery at Southampton University Hospital, This fellowship provided me with excellent exposure to complex minimally invasive gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, particularly laparoscopic colorectal surgery and endoscopy. Moreover, I have developed my knowledge of the holistic management of various complex pathologies. I believe both my patients and colleagues in Palestine will benefit from my experience in the UK. I am confident that we will implement new minimally invasive techniques in the management of GI pathologies including cancer and I will encourage my colleagues to adopt the culture and standards of UK medical practice, including Multi-Disciplinary Team discussions and decision-making. We will also encourage colleagues to accept morbidity and mortality meetings and concentrate on audit and research.

School Canteen Sucess Story

It is 10 o'clock outside in the girls school. The new school canteen has just received today's fresh meals, and are ready for the students. 5 minutes ago, the open ground around the canteen was quiet and empty, but now the voices of hungry students are filling the area. Its breakfast time in Shu´fat refugee camp.

A break from a busy classes is welcomed by most school-students, but the breakfasts here the in girls school in Shu'fat camp in East Jerusalem are special. The School is a part of a project called “Combating Food Insecurity in Impoverished Communities project”, which is implemented by the Palestinian non-governmental organization Juzoor for Health and Social Development in cooperation with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). The aims of the project are to provide a healthier alternative to the snacks commonly sold in the school canteen, to increase awareness about healthy lifestyles, and also to increase recognition of the economic role of women in the targeted localities.

The design of this project has been informed by Juzoor’s extensive experience of working with women’s associations, government structures, and donor agencies on model health and development projects, including school feeding initiatives. This project is an expansion of the successful school canteen model initiative developed by Juzoor.
