Juzoor Conducts Specialized Basic Surgical Skills Course Led by Palestinian Trainers

Juzoor for Health and Social Development, with support from the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development and in partnership with the Palestinian Medical Council, conducted the Basic Surgical Skills Course, accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The three-day course was held from 7 to 9 August 2026 and brought together 21 general surgery residents.

The course is part of a series of specialized training programs organized annually by Juzoor to strengthen the capacities of Palestinian healthcare professionals and enhance the quality of surgical training. This year’s course was delivered entirely by specialized Palestinian trainers, reflecting the growing capacity of national medical professionals to lead accredited surgical training programs and transfer essential knowledge and practical skills to a new generation of doctors.

The course focused on the core practical competencies required by doctors during the early stages of their surgical training, providing them with an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a safe and practical learning environment. It also aimed to strengthen participants’ competence and readiness to perform surgical procedures in accordance with sound professional practices, ultimately contributing to patient safety and improved quality of surgical care in Palestinian hospitals.

This training is particularly important given the mounting challenges facing the Palestinian health sector and the urgent need to invest in national medical professionals, strengthen their practical capacities, and enhance their ability to respond to growing healthcare needs and increasing pressure on hospitals.

Participants represented Augusta Victoria, St. Joseph, Hebron Governmental, Ibn Sina, Istishari, Makassed, Al-Ahli, Rafidia, Jenin, Palestine Medical Complex, Arab Specialized, and An-Najah National University hospitals.

Delivering the course entirely through Palestinian trainers represents an important step toward localizing specialized medical training and strengthening its sustainability, while contributing to the continued development of the Palestinian health sector and the quality of care provided to patients.
